The Via Francigena is a historical itinerary leading to Rome from Canterbury, a major route which in the past was used by thousands of pilgrims on their way to Rome. We follow the last part of this historical path, starting from Umbria region and the superb town Orvieto, crossing the Tuscia, an agricultural region that preserves volcanic lakes, fields and olive groves. Following the ancient roman Via Cassia, we will pass trough beautiful villages as Montefiascone and fortified cities as Viterbo, the Etruscan necropolis and the Roman amphitheater of Sutri. Among thick forests of oaks and forest tracks steeped in bucolic countryside, we will see the ruins of abbeys and old medieval towers. The arrival at Piazza San Pietro in Rome, close our walking towards the "Eternal City" ....

Individual arrival in Orvieto. The beautiful Orvieto rises on a tufaceous hill in the middle of the Umbrian countryside. It keeps the Cathedral, a work of architecture and religious harmony among the most important in Italy, a well-preserved medieval town center and a very interesting path Ipogeo under the city. Leaving the valley surrounding Orvieto, we head towards Bolsena and its lake. Through woods of oak and wild boars, hills and fields we reach the old town of Bolsena and its castle. Known for the miracle of Corpus Domini, the town developed on the banks of the beautiful lake of volcanic origin. Dinner and overnight in Hotel in Bolsena..

Est, Est, Est ... Towards Montefiascone, city of Popes and excellent wine. With a route along the ridge overlooking the lake, we follow the stretch of the ancient Roman Via Cassia, crossing some roads paved in the original path. The town is a real gem among arches, alleys and artisans, keeps the flavor of yesteryear. Start here our journey in the beautiful Tuscia of Lazio region. Dinner in typical restaurant and overnight in Hotel in Montefiascone. (5,00 hours hiking, +100 mt - 400 mt.)
From the Rocca dei Papi Montefiascone, we walk among orchards and vineyards. After a walk set among farmhouses, cypresses and olive trees, we arrive at the thermal baths of Bagnaccio, the pools of warm water where once rested the pilgrims. Above us rises Viterbo, the fortified town at the foot of the chain of green Monti Cimini. Overnight in Hotel in Viterbo. (4,30 hours hiking, + 200 – 200 mt.)
The medieval walls, the seven entrances to the old town, the neighborhoods, the churches and the aristocratic palaces of Viterbo, merit to be visited before returning to the path southward. Through the countryside and forests, we will pass an Etruscan underground tomb until the gates of Vetralla where, we can visit the ruins of the Pieve of St. Marie di Forcassi, an example of architecture typical of the area. Dinner and overnight in a charming hotel in the countryside of Vetralla. (5,30 hours hiking, + 300 – 350 mt.)
Vetralla overlooking the countryside and the hills of Latium from above. Once out of the medieval town center across fields and hazelnut, we come to the Towers of Orlando, the ruins of an ancient monastery. Passed Capranica and its elegant boulevards, we reach Sutri, a settlement of rare beauty, which conserve a Roman amphitheater and an Etruscan necropolis excavated in the tufo, unique works of their kind. Overnight in Hotel in Sutri.

Completely day through fields, woods, lakes and waterfalls. The area around Campagnano is a mainly agricultural area and encompasses the town of Monterosi and the near lake with lotus flowers, the largest lake of Bracciano and Veio Natural Park, a protected nature reserve of great value. Dinner and overnight in hotel in Campagnano. (1,30 hours hiking / – 70 m)
Today we approach Rome by train from Cesano to Monte Mario, the hills over Rome. We end our journey through the history, from Monte Mario, descending towards Piazza San Pietro, the final goal of the Via Francigena. Free visit of some of the most important monuments of the city. Overnight in Hotel/B&B in Rome.
