Situated in the deep south of Europe, a few kilometres from Tunisia, Western Sicily offers a unique mix of nature, culture and history. Starting from Castellammare del Golfo, a small fishing village on the west coast of Sicily, we stay in double cabins on board the gulet, discovering the natural reserves of Zingaro and Monte Cofano. We also visit the archaeological site of Segesta, which hosts the Doric Temple and Theatre that looks out over the countryside of Val d’Erice. The excursions in and around the Egadi Islands give us the opportunity to admire the flora of the Mediterranean in a beautiful wilderness location full of caves, coves and impressive cliffs.
- - Gulet trip along one of the most beautiful coastlines of Sicily
- - The archaeological areas of Segesta, evidence of the Greek civilisation in Sicily
- - The natural reserve of Zingaro, Monte Cofano and the island of Marittimo
Arrival at the airport of Palermo or Trapani. Make your own way (allow approximately 1 hour) to Castellammare del Golfo. From 16.30 you can board the gulet and check into your cabins. Depending on your arrival time, you can visit the fishing village of Castellammare. At 19.00 is the welcome meeting with your guide, who will brief you on the itinerary for the week. Dinner and overnight on board. (5hrs walking – ascent/descent +500 mt – 500 mt)
We transfer by minibus to the slopes of Mount Pispini. We begin to explore the rolling countryside of Val D’Erice, discovering one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Sicily - Segesta. This ancient city was founded by the Elimi in the 4th Century BC and still standing are the Doric Temple and the Theatre that overlooks the surrounding hills. The climb to the summit of Mount Piscina will give us a bird’s eye view of the site, enabling us to appreciate the vastness of this well-preserved area. Later we visit the site itself before returning to Castellammare del Golfo. We set sail for San Vito lo Capo, a small town known for its stunning white beaches. Dinner and overnight on board. (4hrs walking – ascent/descent + 250m – 250m)
In the morning we trek to the Reserve of Monte Cofano. We follow the coastal path under the shadows of the mountains, passing through rich colonies of dwarf palm trees and finishing at the medieval control towers. The view stretches from the plateau of San Vito Lo Capo to the Egadi Islands: from the sea to the marble quarries and the impressive natural cave of Mangiapane. We return to the gulet and sail to Marettimo. Dinner and overnight on board. (4hrs walking – ascent/descent + 450m – 450m)
We sail to the island of Marettimo, considered one of the wildest islands of the Mediterranean. Marettimo offers the traveller dolomite-style peaks, sea caves, Mediterranean maquis and human settlements which are evidence of the ancient passages of different people.
We follow a path that goes up the cliffs and then down to the coast – the sea and mountains will be our companions for the day’s trekking. Return to the gulet. Dinner and overnight on board in Marettimo. (4hrs walking – ascent/descent +150m – 150m)
We sail towards Levanzo, the smallest and less touristy place of the Egadi Islands. Our coastal trekking takes us to Grotta del Genovese, famous for its mural paintings of the Palaeolithic period. Back on the gulet we go to Trapani. Dinner and overnight on board. (4hrs walking – ascent/descent + 100m – 730m)
Transfer to Erice. Wandering through the narrow alleys and cobbled streets of Erice we see much evidence of the medieval period when the town was formed. Being perched at 750m above sea level, it is a real fortress overlooking Trapani, Saline di Paceco and the Egadi Islands. In the afternoon we sail to San Vito lo Capo. Dinner and overnight on board.
(5hrs walking, +500m - 530m, 13km)
In the morning we sail to the first natural reserve in Sicily: Zingaro. Created in 1976, it is home to towering limestone mountains, dotted with spectacular caves and petrified forests, and to a beautiful coast characterised by impressive coves and cliffs. There is the opportunity for refreshing dips in the various coves of the reserve. Sail to Castellammare del Golfo. Dinner and overnight on board. After breakfast make your own way to the airports of Palermo or Trapani.
