July 13th the Salvalarte Sicilia Tonnare second edition began. This event wants to point the attention towards the “tonnare” that are the buildings where the tuna fishes caught were cleaned, cooked and stored.
This places were located on the sea and were very important for the local economy. At the end of the XIX c. there were in Sicily about 80 tonnare and right now there are only a few. The event departs from Portopalo di Capo Passero land ends in Favignana after having passed through many sea villages. The word “tonnara” indicates also the tuna fishing technique that was introduced by the Arab.
Two of the most famous tonnare in Sicily are “la tonnara dei Florio ” in Palermo , that was active until the beginnings of the XX c. and the Favignana tonnara, always belonged to the Florio’s, that is still active. Each year between the end of May and the beginnings of June the old tradition comes to light and the tonnara becomes alive again.
