The mountain bike was born in the USA at the end of the sixties and arrives in Europe around the eighties. At the beginning the mountain bikes were just stout bicycles transformed in order to bear off road tracks. Little by little they have been improved, getting as light as possible and developing special devises to make feel anyone at ease in the wildest areas.

In 1990 the UCI has recognised the mountain bike as an official sport and 6 years later this discipline has been added to the Olympiads in Atlanta. Nowadays many different kind of mountain bike can be found and according to the frame and to the suspensions they can be classified into cross country and marathon , downhill , free ride , endure , trail and street .

Mt Etna Regional Park and Madonie Park in Sicily offer many itineraries suitable to the mountain bike.
