The Archeologica Museum in Lipari was born in the fifties by Luigi Bernabò Brea and Madeleine Cavalier. It is located in the area called Il Castello that during the fascism has been used as interment for the politic opposers. During the fifties the area was opened and the two scientists started their excavations. Il Castello is a citadel made of volcanic material, that lies between the two harbours of the island: Marina Corta and Marina Lunga. Because of its nature Il Castello was the ideal place in case of war and only in recent periods the village has grown outside the protecting walls of the citadel. Inside there is the Cathedral, fact that underline the importance of this place as hearth of the ancient village. The museum collects all the objects found in the whole archipelago and it represents an essential stop for everyone passing by the island. The goal of the two scientists who had the idea to make a museum in Lipari was merely didactic. For this reason the museum tells the history of all the islands from to Neolithic age to the Modern. Very interesting as well is the section dedicated to the volcanology with examples of material come out from Stromboli and the geomorphologic history of the archipelago. Each hall is provided with explication panels in Italian and English. Winter opening hours: 9.00-13.30 / 15.00-18.00 Summer opening hours: 9.00-13.30/ 16.00-19.00.
