Two days of walking on Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe (3350m). Starting from our hotel located at the foot of the Etna, we explore its most recent lava flows as well as walking to the summit craters, to discover a lunar landscape and a wonderful for far-reaching views all over the east cost of Sicily. Our trip will end in Taormina, lovely medieval town, settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro, very popular for its Greek theatre and the wonderful view on the smoking craters of the Etna.

 Daily itinerary

Catania - Etna (2 h hiking, +100 -100 mt) Arrival at Catania. Transfer to the mountain hotel in the southern side of Mt Etna at 1900 mt. Short walk over the track called “crateri Silvestri” for a first approach to the Etna activity. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel.
Etna – Catania (6 hours hiking, +1000 –1000 mt) Excursion till 2900 m. close to the summit craters. We’ll discover the line of big craters opened during the 2002/03 eruption. Amazing view all over the Ionian coast of Sicily. Return back to our hotel, passing on the edge of the “Bove Valley” en huge “caldera” formed by an old collapsed volcano. At 16h30 transfer by public bus from Mt Etna to the hotel in Catania. Overnight stay at hotel in Catania. *Option: As an alternative, possibility to proceed up to 2900 m with cable way and 4x4 (one way ticket 25 euros) or according to the weather condition and volcano activity it’s possible to climb till the summit (3350 mt) at the central craters guided by a mountain escort with a 4WD Vehicle till 2900 mt. then trek to the top. From there we walk back to our hotel (price 60 euros per person).
Taormina (6 hours hiking, +300 –300 mt) In the morning, transfer by public bus to Taormine, one of the most beautiful village in Sicily. Walking tour untill the medieval village of Castelmola. In early afternoon free time for visiting the Greek theatre or bathing in the blue sea of the natural reserve of “Isola Bella”. Transfer by public bus to Catania. Free dinner and overnight stay in hotel with breakfast included.

  Essential Info

Skill level: moderate, 1 to 2 hours walking on the first day and 6 hours walking on the second day, hilly-to-steep terrain. A prior hiking experience is recommended.

Departure: from April to end October  

Accommodation (in double or triple room): 1 night in hotel on the Etna, with dinner included 2 nights in hotel in Catania

Equipment: good and solid trekking boots, frontal torch with batteries, trekking trousers and shorts, bathing suit, hat and gloves, wind jacket, sun glasses, sun cream, multitask knife, trekking sticks.

Luggage: we advise you to use two kinds of bags. A big one with wheels and a rucksack (40 litres) for your walking tours.
