In Ortigia you will be able to admire the ruins of Apollo’s Temple, one of the most ancient doric temples built in the west, the Cathedral and the Maniace Castle which was built in the extreme part of Ortigia Island. On the way back to the hostel, you admire the waters of Aretusa Fountain, one of the few places in Italy where you can still see growing papyrous plants. Dinner and overnight stay in Syracuse.
Relaxing morning dedicated to the visit of the Natural Reserve. Located in the south side of Eastern Sicily, it is a nice place where you can enjoy birdwatching and various plants, but above all you can visit the Swabian Tower (XIII) known as well as the Vendicari Castle and “la tonnara” with the high ciminy which worked untill 1944. Pached lunch. In the afternoon, visit of Noto and its city centre, a small baroque jewell. This city is the resolt of a long and meticulous recontruction aiming to a perfect balance of beauty and harmony. The harmony of the city has been reached to hight standrd. The reconstruction followed a tragic event, the terrifying 1693 hearthquake. Going back to Syracuse, dinner and overnight stay.
The day will be dedicate to the visit of one of the most interesting places in Sicily, the Necropolis of Pantalica. In the valleys, crystal clear water gush from the rock and then disappear after a few hundred meters, in a rocky ravine. It's the typical karst water circulation in the Iblei Mountains, giving rise, over the millennia, to the formation of cavity systems, consisting of sinkholes, caves and springs. The excursion includes a walk of the stream Calcinara, a visit of a grotto and a brief tour of the necropolis. Afternoon transfer to Giardini Naxos and hotel accommodation. Dinner and overnight stay in Giardini Naxos.
In the morning, excursion of the North side of the Etna volcano from Piano Provenzana, through a path along the eruption 2002 - 2003, which will lead us to explore the craters of the "Bottoniera" (a series of eruptive mouths) and admire the lava flow that has bisected the Pinewood Ragabo. Along the path Timpa Rossa we enter a forest of birches, and reach the lava eruption of 1614-24. The lavas of our route gave rise to several caves, we will visit one of the most beautiful cave, the cave of Raspberries, a tunnel of 600 meters. Pached lunch. In the afternoon visit of Taormina, the pearl of the Mediterranean, founded as a resort town, for Sicilians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Saracens who chose to stay there longer, and not only for political reasons. The journey will carry on with the visit of monuments from the Roman/Greek theater to the cathedral, the Odeon, the building Corvaja and Naumachia. Dinner and overnight stay in Giardini Naxos.
Departure after breakfast.
