A complete tour to enjoy the most known archaeological sites such as Pompeii, I Sassi di Matera and I Trulli di Alberobello as well as the four volcanoes in the Mediterranean: Vesuvius, Stromboli, Vulcano and Mt Etna. All of them are famous for their activity and are among the most studied volcanoes in the world. Many contrast in landscapes: from the Castellana Caves in Puglia to the Amalfi Coast with the enchanting small towns Amalfi and Positano. Typical regional cuisine and warm welcome guarantied!

 Itinerary

Bari Arrival at Bari airport and welcome by the guide. Transfer from airport to hotel in Alberobello (60 km). Welcome briefing at the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel.
Castellana Caves (3 Km about 2h visit) and Alberobello Private transfer to the Castellana Caves (40 minutes), visit to this enchanting natural site over a 3 Km itinerary with the visit of the “White Cave” that is said to be one of the most beautiful cave in the world because of its particular light. In the early afternoon free time to enjoy to the historical city centre of Alberobello, known for “I Trulli”, that are very particular houses, round-shaped that can be found only in this region. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Alberobello.
I Sassi di Matera Private transfer to Matera (1h). Free time to visit this enchanting town where many movies have been shot (recently “Passion” by Mel Gibson). I Sassi are very ancient quarters with rock-hewn houses. The whole town is unique. After lunch private transfer to Agerola (3 h), on the Amalfi Coast. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Agerola.
The “Gods path” (5 hours hiking, gradient – 650 mt) Beautiful day of walking over a path called the “Gods path” that is an old mule track used by the farmers cultivating the whole area until the Second World War. The track starts from Agerola at 650 mt and end in Positano, over the sea. Positano is a very known village with a black sandy beach where the group can have a sea bath after the walking. Bus transfer to Agerola, dinner and overnight stay.
Ravello and the Ferriere Valley” (5 h hiking, gradient: + 350 m -350) Starting our day from Amalfi, we visit the Paper Museum. Then we hike along the beautiful Ferriere Valley, that is the ancient “Amalfi industrial area”, where paper mills and iron-works were situated. We reach Ravello, placed at 350 mt above sea level. Free time to discover this village and optional visit to “Villa Cimbrone” and “Villa Rufolo”. We finish our walk in Amalfi passing by the enchanting fishermen village of Atrani. Return by public bus to Agerola. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel
Vesuvius and Pompeii Private transfer to the Vesuvius (1h) and excursion on the border of the volcano. Amazing view over all the volcano and explication of the Vesuvius activity. Private transfer to Pompeii and individual visit to this incredible archaeological site. Transfer to Naples, dinner at the restaurant and ferry to Stromboli. Overnight stay in 2/4 bed en-suite cabin.
Stromboli (6 hours hiking, gradient + 924 – 924 mt.) In the morning free time to visit the lovely village of “San Vincenzo” and also the interesting volcanological centre of the island. In the afternoon leaving for the guided excursion to the active volcano* with certified volcanological guides. Dinner in pizzeria and overnight stay in hotel.
Lipari (3 hours hiking, +250 - 250 mt) In the morning transfer by hydrofoil to Lipari. Easy walking to the southern side of the island. Enchanting view over Vulcano island’s crater. Afternoon, free time for visiting the centre of Lipari, with its interesting Archaeological Museum. Dinner and overnight stay in Lipari.
Vulcano (3 hours hiking, gradient + 390 – 390 mt) Hydrofoil from Stromboli to Vulcano (1h50 min), famous for its black beaches and Thermal Springs. Excursion to Vulcano crater to see the “Fumarole”. In the afternoon mud baths in the Thermal Spring of the island. Free dinner and overnight stay in Lipari.
Taormina Hydrofoil from to Milazzo (50 m) and private transfer to Taormina. Free time to visit the Greek Theatre and the small alleys of this beautiful town, built on a hill overhanging the sea. Private transfer to the southern side of Mt Etna, dinner and overnight stay in hotel located at 1900 mt.
Mt Etna (6 hours hiking, gradient + 450 mt – 1450 mt) Full day exploring Mt Etna escorted by a volcano guide. We take a cable link until 2500 mt and then by 4WD vehicles up to a point at 2900 mt. According to the weather and volcanic conditions there may be the chance to continue on foot to the summit at 3350 m. Our walk will continue through different lava flows. Return on foot to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Private transfer to Catania airport (1h30).

Important: Due to the unpredictable nature of the volcanoes, the weather and the sea condition, the program can be modified. In any case we always try to adhere as much as possible to the described program. The access to Etna and Stromboli craters is generally allowed, however this can change at any time. The volcano guides reserve the right to decide whether or not to climb to the craters according to safety measures, the weather and also the physical condition of the trekkers. Mandala Tour is not responsible in case of impossibility to reach the summit of the volcanoes. An alternative trekking at lower altitude is always organised.

 Essential Information

Skill Level: moderate, 3 to 6 hours walking each day, hilly-to-steep terrain. A prior hiking experience is recommended. The excursion on Stromboli is the most demanding. People with respiratory problems may have discomfort in sulphurous areas with fumes.

Luggage: All transfers are made by Bus. Anyway, sometimes you have to carry your luggage for short distances (for example when you catch the hydrofoil). We advise you to use two kind of bags. A big one with wheels where you put all your staff. A rucksack for your daily trekking.

Equipment: good and solid trekking shoes, wind and water proof jacket, hat and gloves, head torch with batteries, bathing suit, sun glasses and sun cream, alpenstock and gators for volcanic ash path
